Transparency is at the core of everything we do. Here is exactly how we evaluate, score, and rank every protein supplement on ProteInsights.
Every product in our database receives three scores on a 0-100 scale:
The value score measures how much protein you get for your money. It is calculated by comparing the product's price per gram of protein against all other products in the same category (powder, bar, RTD, etc.). Products with a lower price per gram receive a higher value score.
Formula: The price per gram of protein is calculated as: price / (servings_per_container * protein_per_serving_g). This value is then ranked against all products in the same category and normalized to a 0-100 scale, where 100 represents the best value.
The purity score evaluates the quality and cleanliness of the product's formulation. It considers:
Formula: purity_score = (protein_concentration_score * 0.4) + (certification_score * 0.3) + (ingredient_quality_score * 0.3)
The overall score is a weighted composite of the value and purity scores, combined with additional factors:
Formula: overall_score = (value_score * 0.35) + (purity_score * 0.35) + (taste_reputation * 0.15) + (brand_trust * 0.15)
Taste reputation is derived from aggregated consumer review analysis. Brand trust considers factors like company history, transparency practices, and recall history.
All nutritional data and ingredient information comes directly from manufacturer nutrition labels. Our team verifies this data by:
Pricing data is collected from major retailers and updated regularly. We use the most common retail price (not sale prices) to ensure fair comparisons over time.
ProteInsights maintains strict editorial independence. No brand can pay for a higher ranking or score on our platform. Our scoring algorithms are applied uniformly to every product.
We do earn revenue through affiliate links (see below), but affiliate relationships have absolutely no influence on product scores, rankings, or editorial content. Products that we earn affiliate income from are scored identically to products where we do not.
Our personalized recommendation engine uses a multi-step process:
The AI does not invent product data. It uses only verified information from our database to generate its explanations.
ProteInsights earns a commission when you purchase a product through one of our affiliate links. This is how we fund the operation of this site. Here is how it works:
Important: Affiliate commissions do not influence our scores or rankings. We recommend products based solely on their merits according to our scoring methodology.
We periodically review and refine our scoring methodology to ensure it reflects the latest nutritional science and consumer needs. When we make changes, we re-score all products for consistency and publish a summary of the changes here.
